100 Funny Typos from my Graphic Design Blog Stats

November 27, 2009 by Douglas Bonneville

Part of the fun of running a graphic design blog is getting to see how people find the site through Google. I recently took a look at my analytics, and found some crazy typos and hilarious search strings! While most of my traffic comes from other designers through Twitter and other graphic design related sites, search still generates a large percentage of traffic – no matter the intent of the searcher! In looking at the search terms used to find my site in Google Analytics, I would occasionally notice a typo or odd phrase, along with the occasional very-random search string that somehow landed a visitor on the site. Taken on the whole, condensed from about 4000 different search strings from the last few months, the typos and odd searches make an entertaining read. Some of the typos and strange phrases are made with some frequency due to perhaps the layout of the QWERTY keyboard. Some are just funny! Either way, I have presented them below by order of frequency and then alphabetically. The key to getting traffic to my graphic design blog has been writing new material with a relentless focus on what people are searching for. But as you can see, I do get some visitors who end up here by mistake! I hope this humorous list provides some insight for your own blogging adventures, if any, or at least some insight into human nature and how people use search. I have provided some commentary on most of these because it was too fun not to!

Gotta admit it’s funny, but you should realize not every designer speaks English with a native tongue. I sometimes make mistakes when i google topics myself. Sometimes by excident i type a dutch word instead of the english version. I can relate to the visitor who searched on exact words and numbers. Sometimes when you’ve read a post somewhere on the internet and you can’t remember what blog it was on, the best thing to do is search on keywords that where in the title of the post.

Hi Leon: I know, and can tell, some of these are not native speakers of English. So, indeed, the humor is a bit at their expense no doubt for some of these. It’s funny for the same reason failblog.org and engrish.com are funny. Funny things happen unintentionally all the time. It’s a little bit of delight we should all dabble in from time to time, while being sure to laugh the most at our own personal foibles. Maybe someday I’ll post a “Top 10 Lame Graphic Design Posts of All Time from BonFX”. No doubt I’ll have a lot to chose from :).

My favourite: “what percentage of graphic designers are excellent at design?”
    That’s funny.

Favourite of mine from this month: wqordpress theme minialism

    1 for 3.

  8. Douglas Bonneville says

    November 29, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Hi Alex: Sorry, I use only vector stitches. Although you can rip the vector stitches in Photoshop at 300dpi, I still would not do it. Bitmap stitches are always larger, and take longer to heal :).

  9. Douglas Bonneville says

    November 29, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Hi Matt: Is minialism the opposite of maxialism? Regardless, wqordpress is simply best blqogging tool around, no matter what theme you go with.

I love to LOL, and your blog entry was a great way to start my day. My favorites: where should a graphic designer live. Near a cafe with free wi-fi AND i just got my degree in graphic design and i dont have a portfolio. You may have gotten ripped off at your college.

Talking about portfolios, I’m a newbie to website design (but not graphic design), with NO design degree. What is the best and most efficient way to build a porfolio in 6 months?

  11. Douglas Bonneville says

    November 30, 2009 at 10:41 am

Hi Patricia: I don’t have a design degree either. My background is Fine Art which led to illustration which led to graphic design which led to web design. The question for me lately has been how do I get out of web design :). Just kidding.

Let me be frank: the best way to build a portfolio is to advertise free services and build some real sites for some real (free) clients. Once you complete 5-6 projects, you’ll be on your way and will have a legitimate portfolio, paying work will find you as you continue to spread the word. A second best option is to create fictional work, but this type of work is less convincing, as it’s not solving a real problem. “Faked” work can be good, but most new designers don’t get enough of the “fakeness” out of their design and it can look a bit hokey. But give those 2 ideas a whirls and I’m sure you’ll be golden…

Since I started reading this, I didn’t stop laughing for about 10 minutes. Reading 100 funny typos truly made my day. (And I was sad just 5 minutes ago because I screwed my 1TB Backup Drive up)

Favorites: “why should i be a graphic designer”, “what is most popular font for drawings?” and “what are the four things we can draw”.

Funny, I get a lot of these. I think I told you I get “desinger” a lot. It’s great your getting so much traffic from Twitter re-tweets.

  18. Douglas Bonneville says

    December 3, 2009 at 9:46 am

If you get “designer” a lot, it’s probably because I’m on your site a lot :). That must be my number one personal typo. As far as retweets go, it’s nice to know a few people with some huge twitter followings :).

  19. Douglas Bonneville says

    December 4, 2009 at 12:18 am

How cool is that. I made a typo spelling a typo and inadvertently spelled “desinger” as “designer”, because I do make the “desinger” typo a lot, as I mentioned, above, and spelled the incorrect spelling incorrectly as the correct spelling. Hmmph.

So, yes, I do type “desinger” all teh time. 🙂

Hilarious post! I am laughing out loud at the stats, then I’m laughing again because most people don’t get why this is so flippin’ funny! I will have to say that my ‘favorite’ request is the one for converting images from 72 to 300 dpi. They always ask, “Can’t you just do something to it in Photoshop or something?” Or, “Don’t you have software for that?” Thanks for the laugh – I needed that! 🙂
