
Two designers can finish almost identical artwork while having very different experiences making it. One thinks in page arrangements and repeated production changes. Another thinks in paths, appearances, and an established delivery workflow. Both can reasonably prefer the application that fits those habits.
That is a better starting point for FreeHand versus Illustrator than deciding which group of users failed to understand the other program.
This comparison concerns documented FreeHand MX workflows and the reasons people valued them. It does not assume that Illustrator today has the same limitations as Illustrator in 2003 or 2007. For the ownership story, see what happened to FreeHand.
Compare the job, not the toolbar
Consider a modest identity project: a symbol, a two-line wordmark, a business card, a letterhead, and a sign. The designer needs to explore, compare, revise, and prepare outputs.
A tool-by-tool comparison might count pen tools and gradient types. A workflow comparison asks a different set of questions:
- Can the related pieces stay visible together?
- How easily can the symbol be edited inside a clipped composition?
- What happens when the client changes a color everywhere?
- Does the lettering remain editable?
- Can the exported files be used by the next person?
Those questions explain why feature parity and user satisfaction are not interchangeable.
The page was part of the drawing environment
FreeHand MX documented a shared pasteboard with multiple pages, including custom sizes and master pages. A designer could keep related formats together while refining the work. This was an architectural feature of the workspace, not just an export convenience. Using FreeHand MX, chapter 2.
For someone whose work moved constantly between illustration and short layouts, that arrangement could be a major advantage. It reduced the pressure to finish one part before seeing how it behaved in another.
It would be wrong to freeze the comparison there. Modern Illustrator has artboards, and other current applications offer multipage workflows. The useful question now is how those systems behave: page membership, selection scope, moving contents, repeated elements, and output order.
Clipping was also a vocabulary choice
FreeHand’s Paste Inside expressed an intention: put this artwork inside that shape. Illustrator describes related work through clipping masks and drawing modes.
Adobe’s current drawing-modes documentation includes Draw Inside. The long-running community comparison contains both complaints and explanations of that equivalent.
The presence of an equivalent does not erase differences in selecting and moving contents. Equally, a less familiar interaction is not evidence that the capability is absent.
A fair test starts after creating the mask. Move the frame without changing the crop. Move the contents without moving the frame. Reach a nested object. Then save and reopen. That sequence reveals much more than counting the steps needed to make the first clipping relationship.
Selection changes the cost of revision
When objects are organized into groups, the editor has to decide what a click means. The whole group? The member under the pointer? A point in that member? A clipping boundary?
FreeHand’s Pointer/Subselect distinction gave experienced users a vocabulary for those levels. The manual also documented ways to cycle through overlapping objects. Its usefulness came from predictability, especially in a crowded drawing.
Other editors offer their own solutions. A designer migrating between them needs to learn those solutions as a connected system. Memorizing the substitute for one key while leaving the selection model unexplained tends to create frustration.
Production strengths matter as much as drawing feel
It is easy to make a nostalgic comparison entirely about comfortable tools. Professional work also depends on the surrounding environment.
What files do collaborators expect? Which effects survive exchange? What does the printer need? What can another designer continue editing without a long explanation?
A preferred drawing experience can lose its practical advantage if every handoff requires repair. Conversely, compatibility can make an awkward editing environment worth learning. These are legitimate tradeoffs, not evidence of poor taste.
When evaluating a modern replacement, include one exported file in the comparison and inspect it in another application. A feature demonstration inside its own editor is only half the test.
Even the historical preferences were divided
John Gruber’s 2009 post strongly favored FreeHand, then acknowledged equally strong disagreement. His layout-oriented explanation is useful as a personal account; it should not be turned into a rule that all illustrators chose one tool and all designers chose another.
A more careful reading is that different tasks reward different interaction models. Familiarity amplifies those preferences over time.

A useful comparison you can run yourself
Use a copy of ordinary work rather than a carefully selected demonstration. Draw a curved symbol, put it inside a shape, make two size variations, add type, change a shared color, and export.
Keep notes on interruptions: unexpected selection, excessive regrouping, unwanted movement, lost text editability, and export repair. Also record where the unfamiliar tool does something better. Otherwise the exercise becomes a search for confirmation.
The strongest replacement will not necessarily win every step. It should make your common work predictable, preserve its structure, and fit the people receiving it.
