
Speed in a drawing application is not just the time required to render a complex illustration. It is also the number of small corrections you have to make because the program selected the wrong thing, moved a copy unexpectedly, or changed a relationship you meant to preserve.
FreeHand’s Clone command and selection model are useful examples. Neither sounds impressive in a product announcement. Both affect ordinary work repeatedly.
They help explain the attachment described in the FreeHand history, and they provide concrete requirements for anyone building a successor.
An overlapping copy is a distinct intention
In FreeHand, Clone and Duplicate were separate commands. The MX manual, pages 117–118, defines the difference: cloning leaves the new copy on top of the original; duplication places it at an offset.
Consider adding a second treatment to a shape. You want exact alignment before changing a fill, applying an effect, or using the copy in another operation. An offset copy introduces a correction step. An overlapping copy begins in the useful position.
The word clone can be misleading in modern software. In some applications it means a linked instance whose appearance follows a source object. FreeHand’s Clone command, in this context, means an exact overlapping copy. Do not assume a continuing link.
Power duplication preserves a repeated action
A row of marks may require the same movement, scale change, or rotation repeatedly. FreeHand documented power duplication as a way to repeat a transformation while making copies.
This is different from cloning an object and then applying an unrelated transformation each time. The sequence itself becomes reusable.
A useful example is a radial dial. One tick mark establishes the form; rotation and duplication establish the rhythm. The practical questions are where the rotation center sits, how the increment is repeated, and whether the result can be corrected without disturbing the source.
Even if another application offers a more powerful repeat system, the conceptual distinction remains helpful: independent copies, linked instances, and repeated transformations are different tools.
Selection is a language
A complex drawing has levels. A point belongs to a path. A path may belong to a group. That group may sit inside a clipping structure. The clipping structure may live on a locked or hidden layer.
The application needs a way to express which level you intend to edit.
FreeHand’s Pointer and Subselect tools addressed different levels, and its manual documented access to stacked objects and nested members. The benefit was not that a click could read your mind. It was that an experienced user could make an explicit distinction consistently.
When that distinction fails, designers often dismantle the document: ungroup, move an obstructing object away, edit, then reconstruct everything. That workaround has costs. It may change stacking, lose relationships, or create opportunities for tiny positional errors.
A selection exercise worth doing
Create three overlapping shapes. Group two. Put the group inside a fourth shape used as a clipping boundary.
Now try to:
- Move the entire clipped composition.
- Select one group member.
- Edit a point on that member.
- Select an object underneath it.
- Return to selecting the whole composition.
You should know which level is active before dragging. If the interface does not make it clear, pause and inspect the available selection modes rather than compensating with more clicks.
This exercise is useful when moving to Illustrator, Affinity, Inkscape, or a new tool. It separates unfamiliarity from a genuinely missing operation.

Keyboard familiarity helps, but cannot supply missing behavior
The Inkscape source includes a FreeHand-style key mapping. Its own introductory comments describe it as a migration aid rather than a promise that the applications behave identically. The mapping source is an interesting trace of FreeHand’s afterlife.
A matching shortcut can reduce the effort of reaching a command. It cannot make a different grouping model, clipboard behavior, or object hierarchy disappear.
For migration, record the action and its meaning before the key combination. “Copy at exactly the same position” is a portable requirement. A particular modifier sequence is one implementation, subject to platform and customization differences.
These interactions belong together with Paste Inside and workflow migration. For Backhand, their importance is a reminder that a revival must feel predictable in ordinary use, not merely resemble a remembered screenshot.
