Request: Graphic Designers who are also Fine Artists

May 18, 2010 by Douglas Bonneville

I’m collecting references for an article about graphic designers who are also artists, fine or otherwise.

If you have a favorite graphic designer who also has an online portfolio of artwork in addition to their design work, I’d like to see it. Why?

The interest for creating an article like this stems from some earlier posts about graphic design and drawing. Some designers make do with confessedly little drawing skill, and some swear by it.

So, how does being a fine artist affect graphic design work, and vice-versa? I’d like to see, so I will write the article when I collect enough references.

So, if you are a fan of a particular graphic designer who doubles as an artist, let me know!

Please leave comments and links below.

I am a graphic designer, but have not ventured far into the world of fine art. However, one of my friends is great at both: http://www.5sparrows.com/.

I have always been an illustrator and never would have thought I’d take to working on a computer. Once I tried I found I loved it. If you check out my website take note that everything has been illustrated on the computer. I now have ventured into design as well and love that too. I find because of my illustration background most of my design work has an illustrative feel. I hope you will take a look at my work and good luck with your book. I’d love to help in anyway I can.

hi douglas, I couldn’t believe my eyes when i saw this post – this is exactly the angle of an upcoming exhibition im participating in with 2 other artists. our tagline being ‘where fine art meets graphic design’

2 of us are also graphic designers by trade, so we thought we’d play on this for our exhibit.

please check out http://www.explicitlygraphic.com.au for info on who we are and more info on our graphic design meets fine art angle! 🙂

I am a designer and an artist. I do charcoal portraits, but unfortunately, I don’t post them on this website. I currently only have them on my Facebook page. I’ve started a new blog however, and will probably put them in there. I don’t have a way to allow you to see my Facebook photos without being a friend 🙁 But I’d love for you to see them. I can email some to you if you’d like, or if you’d like to just view them on my FB page, my profile name there is LadyOrelinde (I have a vanity page name). Hope you come look, I’m quite proud of them 🙂

  22. Douglas Bonneville says

    July 11, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Hi Angela: I killed my FB account as part of the recent revolt 🙂 Post back or email directly when you have the work available on a public site, since not everyone has FB, and the article will be linking to sites or blogs. I’d love to see what you have, so get something up. I’m sure lots of other people would like to see your work too 🙂

    Hi Douglas,
Another great idea. You are a busy guy.
I can contribute 38 names. In March 2009 the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington had an exhibition called Private Arts that featured 140 fine art pieces created by 39 professional graphic designers. There are too many to list here. I have a PDF of the press release with all their names on it. If you send me your email address through my website I can email it to you.
One of the artists Chris Noel was featured in a web article Art is Where You Find It.

    July 26, 2010 at 12:12 am

Morgan: It sounds like I’ve hit the mother lode with your PDF. I will gladly email you from your website right this second. I guess the article is going to be bigger than my wildest expectation :). I only had about a dozen good finds up to this point.

Hi Morgan. I left a note for through your website. I look forward to learning about these designer / artists!

You’ve probably published your article, but what the heck. I, too, am an artist and a graphic designer. You can check my work at http://www.rubysdesign.com.

If you have published your work, can you please send a copy of the article to me?

    Great appreciate it,
    Ruby

  29. Douglas Bonneville says

    September 18, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Hi Ruby: unfortunately I didn’t get enough participants to warrant an article. Several of the submissions were also not suitable. I had really hoped to find more examples than I needed – but the exact opposite turned out to be the case!
